About This Tour

Mount Rinjani 3D2N Summit Trek: The Ultimate Day-by-Day Itinerary

A 3-day, 2-night Mount Rinjani summit trek is one of the most rewarding hiking adventures in Indonesia. Starting from the legendary Sembalun Route, this challenging journey takes you across golden savannas, above volcanic ridges, to the 3,726-meter summit of Mount Rinjani, and deep into the spectacular caldera surrounding Segara Anak Lake.

But Rinjani is more than simply reaching the summit.

Over three days, you’ll experience dramatic changes in altitude, landscape, temperature, and terrain—from sun-drenched grasslands to freezing pre-dawn summit trails, volcanic scree, tranquil lakes, natural hot springs, and lush tropical rainforest.

The Mount Rinjani 3D2N itinerary is demanding, but for hikers looking for an unforgettable Lombok adventure, every difficult step comes with an extraordinary reward.

Here is what you can expect on this classic Sembalun-to-Senaru Rinjani trekking itinerary.

Day 1: Sembalun Village to Sembalun Crater Rim

The Golden Savanna Ascent

Route: Sembalun Village → Pos 1 → Pos 2 → Pos 3 → Bukit Penyesalan → Sembalun Crater Rim

Elevation: Approximately 1,100 m → 2,639 m

The adventure begins in the highlands of East Lombok, where the landscape surrounding Sembalun offers a dramatic introduction to Mount Rinjani.

After breakfast, registration, and a final equipment check, you’ll leave Sembalun Village and begin walking toward the mountain.

At first, the trail feels deceptively gentle.

The path winds through vast open grasslands surrounded by rolling hills, giving you spectacular views across the Sembalun Valley. The landscape is wide, peaceful, and incredibly photogenic—but the lack of shade means the tropical sun can become a serious challenge as the morning progresses.

This first day is all about pacing yourself.

There is a long way to go.

8:00 AM — Start the Rinjani Trek

After completing registration and preparing your backpack, your Mount Rinjani trek from Sembalun begins.

The early section is relatively gradual, making it a good opportunity to find a comfortable walking rhythm. Avoid rushing, especially if this is your first high-altitude trek.

As you climb, look back occasionally.

The higher you go, the more impressive the Sembalun Valley becomes.

12:00 PM — Lunch at Pos 2 or Pos 3

Around midday, you’ll stop for lunch at Pos 2 (Tengengean) or Pos 3 (Pada Balong).

Your trekking crew will typically prepare a warm meal while you rest and replenish your energy.

This break is particularly important because the terrain ahead becomes significantly more demanding.

Eat well, hydrate, and enjoy the opportunity to recover.

The hardest section of Day 1 is still waiting.

1:30 PM — Conquering Bukit Penyesalan

Then comes Bukit Penyesalan, or “Regret Hill.”

The nickname is well earned.

The trail becomes considerably steeper, with a seemingly endless series of uphill sections leading toward the crater rim. Depending on your pace and trail conditions, this section can take several hours.

There is no need to race.

The secret is to maintain a slow, consistent rhythm.

One ridge.

One breath.

One step at a time.

As fatigue sets in, the thought of reaching the crater rim becomes your motivation.

And eventually, the landscape begins to open.

5:00 PM — Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim

At approximately 2,639 meters, you’ll finally reach the Sembalun Crater Rim.

The transformation is spectacular.

The vast Sembalun Valley stretches below you, while the enormous Rinjani caldera begins to reveal itself ahead. In favorable weather, you can see the deep blue waters of Segara Anak Lake nestled within the volcanic landscape.

This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the entire Mount Rinjani trek.

Settle into camp, enjoy a hot dinner, and watch the sun disappear over Lombok.

Then, get some rest.

Tomorrow begins before sunrise.

And tomorrow, you climb to the top.

Day 2: Mount Rinjani Summit, Segara Anak Lake & Senaru Crater Rim

The Most Challenging—and Most Rewarding—Day

Route: Sembalun Crater Rim → Mount Rinjani Summit → Sembalun Crater Rim → Segara Anak Lake → Senaru Crater Rim

Elevation: 2,639 m → 3,726 m → approximately 2,000 m → 2,641 m

Day 2 is the defining chapter of the Mount Rinjani 3D2N summit trek.

It begins in complete darkness.

It reaches the highest point of your journey.

And it ends on another spectacular crater rim overlooking one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanic landscapes.

Expect a long and physically demanding day.

But this is also the day you’ll remember for years.

2:00 AM — The Summit Attack

The alarm rings while the mountain is still silent and dark.

After a light breakfast and a hot drink, you’ll put on your warm layers, secure your headlamp, and begin the climb toward the Mount Rinjani summit.

The first few sections are steep but manageable.

As you gain elevation, the temperature drops and the wind can become increasingly intense.

Then comes the final section.

This is where Rinjani tests your determination.

The trail becomes covered in loose volcanic sand and gravel. Every step forward can feel like two steps back as your feet slide beneath you.

The pace slows.

The conversation disappears.

Everyone becomes focused on the same goal:

the summit.

6:00 AM — Sunrise at Mount Rinjani Summit

At approximately 3,726 meters, you finally reach the summit of Mount Rinjani.

Then the darkness begins to disappear.

The horizon slowly turns brighter as the first rays of sunlight illuminate Lombok.

From the summit, the panorama can be extraordinary. Below, the enormous caldera surrounds Segara Anak Lake, while distant islands and volcanic peaks may appear on the horizon when visibility is excellent.

On exceptionally clear days, you may even catch views toward Mount Agung in Bali to the west or Mount Tambora on Sumbawa to the east.

But the view is only part of the experience.

Standing on the summit after hours of climbing through darkness creates a sense of accomplishment that photographs can never fully capture.

Take a moment.

Breathe.

Enjoy the sunrise.

You made it.

9:00 AM — Descend to Sembalun Crater Rim

After spending time at the summit, you’ll begin descending toward the crater rim.

The descent is considerably faster than the climb, but the loose volcanic terrain requires careful footing.

Once you reach camp, enjoy a more substantial breakfast and take time to recover.

But don't get too comfortable.

There is still a long way to go.

10:00–11:00 AM — Descend Into the Rinjani Caldera

From the Sembalun Crater Rim, the trail drops dramatically toward Segara Anak Lake.

This is one of the most visually impressive sections of the trek.

The enormous volcanic caldera surrounds you as the trail winds down the rocky slopes. The scale of the landscape is difficult to appreciate until you are standing inside it.

After the summit push, however, this descent can be tough on tired legs.

Take your time.

Use your trekking poles.

And enjoy the changing scenery.

1:00 PM — Segara Anak Lake & Natural Hot Springs

Eventually, the trail reaches the shores of Segara Anak Lake, one of Mount Rinjani’s most iconic landmarks.

The contrast is remarkable.

Only hours earlier, you were standing at 3,726 meters in freezing pre-dawn conditions.

Now you are beside a peaceful volcanic lake surrounded by dramatic cliffs.

Enjoy lunch beside the lake while your trekking crew prepares your meal.

If conditions and the trekking schedule allow, you can also visit the nearby natural hot springs, a welcome opportunity to relax your tired muscles after the summit climb.

This is one of those moments when the intensity of the trek suddenly feels completely worthwhile.

3:00 PM — The Climb to Senaru Crater Rim

Unfortunately, the day isn't finished.

Leaving Segara Anak behind, you’ll begin another demanding ascent toward the Senaru Crater Rim, climbing back to approximately 2,641 meters.

After the summit and the long descent into the caldera, this final climb can be one of the toughest parts of the entire itinerary.

Keep your pace steady.

Save your energy.

And focus on the trail immediately in front of you.

Eventually, the ridge comes into view.

5:30 PM — Sunset at Senaru Crater Rim

Reaching the Senaru Crater Rim marks the end of an extraordinary day.

From this side of the mountain, you’ll have a completely different perspective of Rinjani.

Below lies Segara Anak Lake, surrounded by the immense volcanic caldera, with the dramatic cone of Mount Barujari rising from within it.

As the afternoon light fades, the landscape takes on a completely different character.

Enjoy dinner at camp and take in your final mountain sunset.

Tonight, there is no 2:00 AM summit alarm.

Sleep well.

You’ve completed the hardest day of the journey.

Day 3: Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village

From Volcanic Highlands to Tropical Rainforest

Route: Senaru Crater Rim → Tropical Forest → Pos 2 / Pos Extra → Senaru Village

Elevation: Approximately 2,641 m → 601 m

After two days of dramatic volcanic scenery, Day 3 offers a completely different side of Mount Rinjani.

The rocky landscape gradually disappears.

The vegetation becomes thicker.

The air becomes warmer.

And the trail leads you into the lush tropical forest surrounding Senaru Village.

7:00 AM — One Last Look at Rinjani

Wake up to your final morning on the mountain.

After breakfast, take one last moment to appreciate the crater, the lake, and the surrounding peaks before beginning the descent.

The trail gradually enters the forest, providing welcome shade after the exposed terrain of the previous days.

The descent is long, but compared with the previous day's summit push, the pace is generally more relaxed.

Midday — Into the Rinjani Rainforest

As you descend further, the landscape transforms completely.

Open volcanic terrain gives way to dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, vines, moss-covered rocks, and vibrant vegetation.

The forest is also home to various species of wildlife.

If you're lucky, you may spot lutung (black ebony leaf monkeys) or long-tailed macaques moving through the canopy.

Keep your eyes open—but remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and never feed them.

Lunch is typically served somewhere along the trail, often around Pos 2 or Pos Extra, depending on your trekking schedule.

1:00–2:00 PM — Arrive at Senaru Village

After several hours of descending through the rainforest, the trail finally reaches Senaru Village at approximately 601 meters.

Your 3D2N Mount Rinjani trek is officially complete.

You’ll likely feel tired.

Your legs may be sore.

Your clothes may be covered in dust.

But there is also a sense of satisfaction that comes from completing one of Indonesia’s most iconic mountain adventures.

From Senaru, your transport can take you onward to your next destination, including Senggigi, Mataram, Lombok International Airport, or the Gili Islands.

And somewhere along the journey home, you’ll probably find yourself looking back at the mountain.

Already thinking about coming back.

What to Pack for the Mount Rinjani 3D2N Trek

Preparation is essential for a successful Mount Rinjani summit trek.

Rinjani is not a simple walk. Over three days, you’ll encounter intense sun, steep climbs, loose volcanic terrain, cold temperatures, rocky descents, and tropical rainforest.

The right equipment can make a significant difference to your comfort and safety.

Trekking Poles

Highly recommended, particularly for the summit push and steep descents.

Trekking poles provide additional stability on loose volcanic sand, gravel, and uneven terrain while helping reduce the strain on your knees during long descents.

Warm & Layered Clothing

The summit can be extremely cold before sunrise, especially when combined with strong wind and altitude.

Pack layers that allow you to adjust to changing conditions:

  • Thermal base layer
  • Fleece or insulating layer
  • Windproof or waterproof jacket
  • Warm gloves
  • Beanie or thermal hat
  • Warm socks

Avoid relying on a single thick jacket. Layering gives you much greater flexibility throughout the trek.

Headlamp

A reliable headlamp is essential.

Your summit push begins around 2:00 AM, meaning you’ll be hiking for several hours in darkness.

Bring spare batteries or ensure your rechargeable headlamp is fully charged before the trek.

Sturdy Hiking Shoes

Choose comfortable, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots with reliable traction.

The terrain changes dramatically throughout the journey, from grassland and dirt trails to volcanic scree, steep rocky sections, and potentially muddy rainforest paths.

Never start a major Rinjani trek with brand-new footwear.

Hydration & Trail Snacks

Stay hydrated throughout the trek and carry enough water according to your guide's recommendations.

High-energy snacks such as energy bars, nuts, chocolate, dried fruit, or other easy-to-carry foods can be useful during the longer climbs.

Rain Protection & Dry Bags

Weather in the mountains can change quickly.

A lightweight rain jacket and waterproof protection for electronics, documents, and clothing are worthwhile additions to your pack.

Is the Mount Rinjani 3D2N Trek Right for You?

The Mount Rinjani 3D2N summit trek via Sembalun is physically demanding and requires good preparation.

You should be comfortable with:

  • Long hours of hiking
  • Steep ascents and descents
  • High-altitude conditions
  • Loose volcanic terrain
  • Early-morning summit climbs
  • Significant elevation gain and loss
  • Changing weather conditions

You don't need to be an elite athlete.

But you do need endurance, preparation, patience, and the willingness to keep moving when the trail becomes difficult.

The mountain rewards those who respect its challenge.

The Journey Is Bigger Than the Summit

The summit of Mount Rinjani may be the headline.

But it isn't the whole story.

It's the golden savanna of Sembalun.

It's the silence before sunrise.

It's the struggle through volcanic sand.

It's the first glimpse of Lombok from 3,726 meters.

It's the descent into the ancient caldera.

It's the peaceful blue waters of Segara Anak.

It's the warmth of the natural hot springs.

It's the final walk through the rainforest toward Senaru.

And finally, it's the feeling of looking back at Rinjani knowing that you climbed it on your own two feet.

Three days. Two nights. One unforgettable journey.

Mount Rinjani isn't just a mountain to climb.

It's an experience to remember.
